I have been employed in the position of Industry Employment and Project Co-ordinator at MPREC since the 2nd March 2015 and one of my roles was to facilitate the Walgett Men’s Group to help the group establish themselves and provide support around purchasing equipment and also around developing a Men’s group steering committee as well as a Supervisor for the group which was to be selected by the Steering Committee members.
The Walgett Men’s Group have undertaken many activities which have included: Aboriginal Painting, Crafts, Boomerang, Clap Stick, Didgeridoo, Furniture, Jewellery Making and other wooden Aboriginal Artifacts. The group of men are great role models for young Aboriginal Men in the community of Walgett and they continue to learn new skills which has created a lot of self-belief amongst the Men which in turn I believe has been the main reason to why the group has consistently been running strong for the past 8 months.
Recently the Walgett Men’s Group have been selected by the Walgett Hospital to supply a quote to undertake works in painting a Mural in the main entrance to the New part of the Walgett Hospital as well as also being asked to provide an Aboriginal painting 1.2 meter squared which is to be displayed on the wall in the Hospital main foyer area.
The Walgett Men’s group members are a very proud group of Men which are a pleasure to be associated with and I strongly believe they will continue to create wonderful artwork into the future and be a vital part of the Walgett Community especially in regards to helping the younger Men of Walgett.
